What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with a dedicated training programme, where you can earn money, learn skills from experienced staff and receive training and qualifications all at the same time.
Apprenticeship Levels
Apprenticeship vacancies are advertised with different levels. People can apply for any level as long as they meet the entry requirements
- Intermediate
This is a starter level where the entry qualification can be flexible. Some employers may not specify GCSEs, some may specify maths and English. If the person did not achieve maths and English at Level 4 or above, then they may need to take them during their apprenticeship.
- Advanced
This is equivalent to a Level 3 qualification/A levels and so employers will usually require a range of GCSEs at Grade 4 or above as a minimum.
- Higher
This equivalent to a Level 4 /5 qualifications or a 1st/2nd year of a degree, so employers will usually require a Level 3 qualification such as a National Diploma (level 3) or A Levels.
- Degree
This is at level 6 and a degree programme will be completed upon successful completion. Employers usually need L3 qualifications such as a National Diploma (L3) or A Levels.
Degree Apprenticeship
Degree apprenticeships allow the apprentice to undertake work that is at degree level or higher and also provide the education required to successfully complete a degree, often through day or block release with a local university or Higher Education provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
- When can I apply?
Apprenticeships are not like academic courses, you can apply for an apprenticeship at any time of the year. See below to find out how to find an apprenticeship.
- Are apprenticeships just for young people?
No. There is no age limit, so anyone of any age can apply.
- Are Degree Apprenticeships an alternative to going to university full time?
Yes. A degree apprenticeship is a great alternative to going to university full time. The employer pays the university fees and so the apprentice completes the degree without a large loan to pay off.
